LyrixFix is an area where we can discuss great lyrics (whether or not in the musical styles that we define as FRINGE) and attempt to interpret their meaning or just revel in their sheer beauty. Well-crafted lyrics are the new poetry, that lives within the strictures of the song medium of course.

Maestro does have one pet peeve: bad grammar in lyrics. Case in point: Sir Paul McCartney (Live And Let Die) ”…in this ever-changing world in which we live in…”

What makes a good song will be a source of debate for aeons to come because different people find different experiences interesting or beautiful. Music is, by definition, subjective. Maestro doesn’t claim to have any talent for writing at all. It is just something he enjoys doing as an expressive activity. It helps him understand things in his own mind. There are many, many writers and poets that Maestro admires and who exhibit a fluidity of style and thought that impresses him to no end. The biggest compliment a person can make, in Maestro’s view, is to state: ‘I wish I had written (or painted, or sculpted or composed) that’.

However, Maestro’s esteemed colleague, fransi@FringeMusic once wrote this about the musical experience, which I wholly endorse:

It seems to me that there are four aspects to any song that create the experience for the listener:

For the Casual Listener (people who listen solely to what the radio serves up to them and decides.. like/don’t like) the first two are probably the most prominent in making that decision 

The Tune. i.e. melody

[requires certain combination of notes blended properly for the key. the immediate gut reactions of sadness or joy can be based purely on the combination and rhythm of the notes]

The Lyric. i.e. the words without the melody

[The words can often stand alone as poetry but sometimes are so chosen by an artist because of the manner in which the SOUNDS of the words support the effect desired by the artist.]

 The Structure. i.e. the way that the musical notes are combined in groups and the groups rearranged in various interesting ways. The tempo and the empty spaces. The dynamics (loud and soft) and the intensity (crunching many notes together in short timeframe. The large segment of a song in which the main melody is dropped completely for an interim phrasing of contrast or emphasis.).

[This is my favorite aspect of a really well-written song.]


The Delivery. i.e. the quality of the musicians, the manner in which they are able to twist and turn around one another in the releasing of the music from their collective souls.

[As a sound tech for several bands, I can tell you of many many miserable hours in rehearsal spaces.. MANY. But I was also privileged to be around when some truly phenomenal musicians warmed up and later cooled down by “jamming”. It is the most amazing thing on the face of the earth to hear a drummer or a bass player start a little riff and have the guitar or the keys begin to fill it in and then to hear an extraordinary singer or sax player top it all off with a wailing of notes bringing a fog of emotional vibrations that cannot ever be described and will never be heard again except by the angels as the energy of the music traverses into the universe.] auggghhhh !!!

That… THAT.. is reason to be alive.
